The Flemingsburg Elementary School program called for ten (10) classrooms plus gymnasium to be added–simple? No! The site sloped precariously, and the building sits at five levels but only two floors. Our task was to integrate our 28,000 s.f. addition with the existing facility to accommodate ADA students at all levels, plus create a circulation routing which would make sense. The design does in fact connect at five levels, making the facility 100% accessible, incorporates geothermal heating/cooling, adds 50 parking spaces, simplifies circulation on site and playground access, and it maintains the scale of the original building. All this and under budget by $50,000 at $3.5 million, plus only one change order for found rock conditions (.02% of the contract).
